West
Loch Tarbert Beaches & Coastline
West
Loch Shores has access to some fantastic beaches and coastline.
From
West Loch Shores Tarbert you can travel southwards and find
some stunning coastline on the east and west coasts of Kintyre.
Only
20 minutes southbound on the A83 towards campbeltown you can
drive through Clachan and reach 'seal point' where during the
warm summer days you can see seals lazing on the rocks only
perhaps 100 metres away from the mainland.
A
few minutes further down the coast, keep your eyes open for
'flatstone beach' which has some lovely soft sand, some of
the clearest shallow waters you will find with cold and warm
currents. This piece of coastline stretches approximately 2km
and is mostly made up of round flat stones created by the erosion
of the sea. There are some great skimming stones to be found.
A
further 10 minutes drive will take you to 'point sands' which
is a caravan park and public beach. The beach is probably the
very best in the area and stretches for between 3 and 4 kilometres
from end to end. The beach is very sandy and features small
dunes. There is also a play park at the caravan park for children.
Skipness has one of the best beaches on the peninsula with
great beaches
at Machrihanish, Southend and Westport.
On
the east coast if you travel to Skipness you will find again
some fantastic scenery, and a lovely beach near the local Skipness
Castle. From the beach here you can look out across to Arran
and watch the ferry go by, sit and eat lunch at the seafood
cabin. Ideal for tourists, artists, food connoisseurs and photographers
alike.
