Tarbert Castle

Few visitors on their way to West Loch Shores miss the splendor of the castle that overlooks Tarbert's harbour.

Tarbert Castle, once under the ownsership of Scottish legendary figure, Robert the Bruce, now sits overlooking the natural harbour of Tarbert partially covered with ivy and with only the main keep left standing.

The grounds of the castle are marked out, and there are information boards on the plan of the castle identifying the inner and outer walls.

The castle is a popular architectural subject for photography and artwork in the village and is worth a short visit.

You can continue past the castle further along the forestry walk up the hill for another 15 minutes and reach a wonderful viewpoint to see northwards along Loch Fyne and on a clear day can make out Lochgilphead 14 miles north. If you are a keen walker you can continue and find your way to skipness but this is only recommended for experienced walkers as it is a long long walk.

In essence West Loch Shores has access to some great historical buildings and attractions all within a short distance of West Loch Shores Tarbert or West Loch Shores Brenfield Croft.
