Skipness Castle

Skipness, has the largest castle remains in Kintyre and is less than 30 minutes drive from West Loch Shores Tarbert.

The castle, set on beautiful grounds and overlooking the hills of Arran is simply majestic. The castles construction began as early as the thirteenth century with hallhouse and chapels being constructed first, and the great walls being built later. Construction continues for centuries with more floors added forming a towerhouse.

Unusually the castle was built upon flat land, as opposed to the almost compulsory high hilltop with far reaching views. But for modern day exploration this is excellent as you can access all around the castle and see its splendor.

On a warm summers day you can buy some food from the Seafood Cabin, and relax on the well kept lawns overlooking the waters and hills out to Arran, if you are feeling more energetic then Skipness has a very fine beach which stretches for several kilometers.

There is also said to be an old runway out here at Skipness and many planes from one of the wars at the bottom of the ocean.

For further information please pick up a leaflet from the Tourist Information Centre. There are information boards at Skipness Castle for you to read including maps of the possible layout of the castle when it was complete.
