Saddell Abbey

Just south of Carradale, approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes drive from West Loch Shores Tarbert is Saddell Abbey.

Saddell Abbey, is a ruin of a Cistercian Abbey, but is still in very good condition and overlooks the Kilbrannan Sound from the unusually flat land in that area.

In 1160 the Cistercian Abbey was founded in 1160 by Somerled who's descendants became the Clan MacDonald. He was also a warrior king. The abbey is built next to what is commonly known as the 'stream of the monks'.

Just a short distance from Saddell Abbey is Saddell Castle. The grave of Somerled, warrior king is also at the castle.
