History > Kilmartin Glen

Kilmartin is a tiny village north of Lochgilphead as you head towards Oban.

The village is quaint, tranquil and has great historic significance to the area of Argyll. Kilmartin House Museum sits at the centre of the village, next to Kilmartin church.

Kilmartin Church displays one of the largest collections of early carved Christian grave stones and celtic crosses in Scotland. You can see some examples inside the small church but also outside in a stone building where the large stones are on display. The graveyard that accompanies the church is an inspirational place and very interesting with a fantastic view across the glen behind.

Kilmartin Glen is accessed through the Museum where they can take you on a guide across the glen to some of the locations of importance. Alternatively you can go and see some of the standing stones at the other end of the glen near Mhine Mhor nature reserve.

With over 350 ancient monuments within approximately 6 miles of the Museum at Kilmartin, 150 of which are thought or known to be prehistoric, you are sure that you can find something interesting to see here.

For more information why not visit the Tourist Information Centre and pick up a leaflet or visit their web site here.
