14 Days - Day 8 - Skipness, Seafood Cabin

Skipness

This is can be a simple day out driving to and then walking around the Skipness estate taking in the Castle and Chapel. or a longer day by walking across the hills from Tarbert and taking in the sights of Skipness. In either case be sure not to miss the seafood at the Skipness Seafood Cabin.

The walk starts by going up to Tarbert Castle and then walking the 11 miles along a well marked track to Skipness. On a good day the views across Loch Fyne and Kilbrannan Sound to Arran are stunning. Details of the walk can be found in the Tourist Information Centre in Tarbert. Alternatively the walk can be started from West Loch Shores Tarbert – just ask Malcolm or one of the staff for directions. If you are walking you will need to arrange transport back to Tarbert. There is a regular bus service from the Post Office in Skipness which is sown on this web site.

The drive to Skipness is simple. Take the A83 South from Tarbert until just past the Kennacraig ferry terminal. Turn left onto the B8001 then, once on the East side of Kintyre turn left to Cloanaig and Skipness. There is a car park at the far end of Skipness from which there are a number of marked walks which will take you past the Skipness castle; a fine 13th-century castle with a 16th-century tower house in one corner; and Skipness Chapel, an early 14th-century chapel which lies near the seashore and holds a small collection of fine grave slabs.
