Inveraray
Inveraray
is
about an hour’s drive from Tarbert on the
A83 towards Glasgow. En route you will pass a number
of opportunities for forestry walks, the world renowned
Crarae Gardens and also the restored highland township
at Auchindrain.
Inveraray is a Royal Burgh and is the seat of the Dukes
of Argyll. It is probably the best preserved planned
town in Scotland. A visit to Inveraray
Jail is a must while
in the town as is a trip to Inveraray
Castle, the home
of the Duke
and Duchess of Argyll.
Also in the town is the Inveraray
Maritime Museum with
the 3 masted schooner the Arctic Penguin and the Eilean
Easdale a traditional highland puffer.
Loch Awe
Lochaweside can
be reached by taking a left turn through the arch in
Inveraray onto the A819 towards Dalmally. About 8 miles
on turn left along the narrow and windy B840 towards
Ford and enjoy the delightful scenery. At the head of Loch
Awe is the stunning Kilchurn Castle show in the image
to the left. The castle is now in the care of National
Heritage and an entry fee is charged for entry. The
castle is open seasonal hours and closed during the
off season. When you have finished your exploration
continue following the directions back to West Loch
Shores.
At Ford turn left
onto the A816 into Lochgilphead where you join the
A83 towards Tarbert.
