Kilmartin
Glen & The Crinan Canal
The peninsula just north of Tarbert is called
Knapdale and the B8024 road along it’s coast offers
one of the most scenic routes in Scotland it starts just
to the West of Tarbert, on the left a couple of hundred
yards past Mack and Mags. It then wends it way along West
Loch Tarbert through natural moorland, passing ancient
cemeteries to Kilberry where you can see the remarkable
carved gravestones and experience a meal at the award winning
Kilberry Inn (the only hostelry on this stretch of road).
You then continue to the end of this road and join the
A83 going north.
At Ardrishaig you will pass over the Crinan
Canal which wends its way from Loch
Fyne to Crinan providing a short cut for boats not
wishing to take the long route
around the Mull of Kintyre. The road to Oban follows
the canal to Cairnbaan where a left turn will take you,
alongside the canal to Crinan. The canal passes through
beautiful countryside. It is a great place to walk or
just sit and enjoy the scenery and the boats going past.
There are also opportunities for refreshment at Ardrishaig,
Cairnbaan and Crinan.
