Campbeltown
& A Boat Trip Round The Mull Of Kintyre
Campbeltown, known locally as “the wee toon”,
was once the whisky distilling capital of the world with
as many as 32 distilleries operating in the town. Most
of these have now gone but there is still the Springbank
distillery remaining which is Scotland’s oldest privately
owned distillery. More information on this great whisky
can be found at their
website.
Campbeltown also produces some of the best Cheddar Cheeses
available anywhere. Perhaps the best known being Mull
of Kintyre Cheddar, Drumloch Cheddar and the Taste of
Gigha
Cheeses.
Other activities
which are must do’s are a look
are the Campbeltown Heritage Centre and a walk to Davaar
Island to see the remarkable cave painting (check tide
times with the tourist office on the harbour before leaving).
Well worth trying
is a Mull of Kintyre Seatours 2 hour boat trip around
the Mull of Kintyre in their rigid inflatable
boats. This will give you the opportunity of seeing dolphins,
seals and the local birdlife as well as a chance of coming
across basking sharks and minke whales. You can finde
details of their latest trips and offers here.
If time permits then you could take in a film at the
wee picture house on the seafront.
On your return from Campbeltown take a look into Machrihanish
with its full championship golf course and delightful
5 mile beach.
